Like cats? How about more cats?
The cats at Ernest Hemingway’s house in Key West, Florida do what they please. They roam the grounds. Sit in the shade. Climb trees.
The keepers of the property give visitors specific instructions. “You can pet the cats but please refrain from picking them up.” That is true of most of the beautiful things of Key West. Even the beautiful butterflies of the conservatory. And I’m sure it is also true of the women that walk up and down Duval Street.
The cats are around people constantly. So many different people. So many different scents, aromas, essences, auras, personas that they seem to all be a blur. The cats pay hardly any mind to the individual behind the friendly fingers. They just stretch luxuriously and take the caress until one of the caretakers says it’s time for dinner.
And when they eventually pass away they are lovingly placed in the ground on the grounds of the property with a nameplate and a remembrance – eternal companions in spirit to Ernest Hemingway.
