As a Man…

The Pretty Pair

Stacey Dash, a person in the movie Clueless, is featured on TMZ.com today because she wrote a 1,344 page rant (somebody counted) about how disappointed she is that Obama was reelected last night.  The second paragraph of her rant starts, “As a single Mother…”  (Yes, the M in Mother is capitalized.  ALWAYZ).

I don’t know if anyone else has noticed this but there is a growing and disheartening trend of prefacing one’s opinion with some sort of personal anecdote or qualifier that makes one’s opinion have some sort of ill-begotten added weight.  Below are some more examples of personal qualifiers that will give any opinion that comes after it added resonance.

As a recent train fire survivor…

As the father of two sets of Siamese Twins…

As the defeatherer of rare and exotic birds…

As a man currently covered in marinara sauce…

As the Mother of a small owl…

As a man about to be hit by a train…

As a man who can’t find the neck hole of his sweater…

As a person currently dying in a fire…

As a man…
